07/30/08 Collaboration between artists results in prize-winning print

NORWALK

Master Printer Tony Kirk, artistic director of the Center for Contemporary Printmaking in Norwalk, and artist Donald Axleroad combined their talents to win first prize with the woodcut "Minatour Escapes the Labyrinth" in the print and graphic category in the recent "Shapes and Shadows" exhibition at the Flinn Gallery at the Greenwich Library.

The print was a collaboration between Axleroad, who created the woodcut, and Kirk, who produced the finished print. Sponsored by the Art Society of Old Greenwich, the competition was juried by Charles Ray, former director of the Silvermine School of Art.

"It was a challenging print to make, and Tony worked very hard on it," said Axleroad. "He persevered; he's a stickler for perfection." Known for his work inspired by Greek mythology, Axleroad has received dozens of awards. Recently, his "Minatour Escapes the Labyrinth" also won a prize in Drawing and Graphics at the Carriage Barn's Spectrum exhibition in New Canaan and the Members Show Award of Excellence in Any Medium from the Kent Art Association in Kent.
